Crime and punishment in Wiltshire, 1828-1906
A talk by Steve Hobbs
About 3000 sworn statements of the accused, the victims and the witnesses of minor crimes survive for this period and they offer a unique source of incidental detail about the lives of ordinary people.
A festival favourite, Steve Hobbs is a retired archivist who has lived in Westbury for over thirty years and spent many years at Wiltshire’s County Archivist.
In this time, he has extensively researched the history of Westbury, Dilton Marsh and Westbury Leigh. He has given talks and led walks around these places and is president of Wiltshire Family History Society.
