History & Mystery
Tony Painter presents The History and Mystery of White Horses and Hill Figures.
Tony is a geographer, former MoD Map Research Officer and a writer of local history notes for Alan Godfrey maps.
His talk covers the range of hill figures – mainly cut in the chalk hills of England, including White Horses, Crosses, Giants, Military Badges and other oddities from home and abroad and their possible origins, construction, age and purpose.
Relatively little is known or recorded about these figures and they have consequently attracted a wealth of legend and speculation. In his talk, Tony will attempt to summarise what is known; separate fact from fiction and highlight some recent scientific analysis which may provide some insight into their age.
