Covid-19 – update. Jazz @ The Laverton

In light of the uncertainty surrounding the Covid-19 outbreak and following the UK Government’s announcement urging the public to avoid gatherings in crowded places, we have regrettably decided to cancel the forthcoming event “Jazz @ The Laverton” on 24 April. This was further complicated by the fact that Rossano Sportiello is based in the USA and of course flights between there and the UK have been suspended. We have contacted those people who bought tickets online and arranged for refunds. If you bought tickets through Maggie Atterbury, could you please contact her direct on 01380 830452. Our planning continues for the main festival fortnight in September / October and we look forward to seeing you all at many of our events then.

This year, we are expanding our outlier programme with some exciting events. The first is an exciting evening of “Jazz at the Laverton” on 24 April with the award-winning jazz pianist Rossano Sportiello who is visiting from the USA. Tickets are on sale now so don’t miss out on what should be an amazing evening of the highest quality jazz. Then on 4 June, the festival is bringing its first outdoor Shakespeare event, the rip-roaring, hilarious production of The Merry Wives of Windsor from The Three Inch Fools. This will be at Heywood House and will be an awesome evening. Tickets on sale soon. More details on our What’s On page.

Over for another year!

Yes, it’s over for another year – and even with the difficulties of prolonged roadworks at the time of the festival fortnight, 2019 still proved to be a wonderful festival. With old favourites and some exciting new performers, the Westbury Festival goes from strength to strength and we are already giving some thought to next year. In fact our AGM and first planning meeting for 2020 takes place this Tuesday, 12 November at 7 pm at the Laverton. Everyone is welcome! However, we couldn’t do it alone. Each year, sponsors, advertisers and loyal audiences all contribute to the festival’s continuing success and the Festival Committee would like to thank everyone for their support. Please watch this space for details of festival events through the year and perhaps consider supporting us by becoming a Festival Friend. We look forward to seeing you next year.

It’s almost here!

Westbury Festival 2019 is almost here! We have some great events this year to hopefully entice you to join in the fun. We open with an exhilarating evening of gospel from Bristol’s Renewal Choir which should have you clapping and dancing in the aisles and of course the music continues with our popular lunchtime concerts. If you like jazz, we welcome the return of John Law (one of the UK’s most imaginative jazz pianists) or you can rock at the Hollies with Open Road. We close the festival with BAFTA nominated composer and songwriter, Richard Digance, who is including the festival as part of his 1949-2019 Platinum Tour. However, it isn’t all about music, we also have amazing talks, art exhibitions, vintage cinema and a mind-blowing festival quiz. If workshops are your thing, then we have Tunisian crochet, spinning, a world-record knitting attempt and a fascinating evening of artisan floristry. If you want an evening of fun, then come along to our comedy night when you get a home-cooked two course meal included or a hilarious theatre production which brings the Scottish highlands to Westbury. Kids aren’t forgotten either with a craft Superheroes and Scraptstore event and a retro gaming day with Cyberjam reliving the time when pixels were few but the fun was legion! So get your tickets now either online here on the website or our cash box office in Maristow Street.

Eric Ravilious’ Lost Puffin Picture Book

If you are a fan of those amazing pictures of White Horses by Eric Ravilious, then this is not to be missed! The story of Eric Ravilious’ lost Puffin Picture book has captivated fans and researchers for decades. Joe Pearson of DFT publishing will be giving a fascinating talk on how he has re-imagined the book, originally titled ‘White Horses’ based on Ravilious’ 1941 dummy book which can be found at the Wiltshire Museum. This is a real opportunity to glimpse what the original Puffin picture book might have resembled. The talk is on Friday 26 July at the Methodist Church, Station Road, Westbury. More information can be found here. We expect this event to be very popular so it is advisable to get your tickets quickly.
